Malware

Software built to steal data, take control of a device or damage it: infostealers, trojans, spyware, worms and loaders.

How it works

Malware usually needs a first step from the user or from an unpatched flaw: opening an attachment, running a cracked program, installing a fake app or visiting a compromised site. Once running it may steal saved passwords and sessions, log keystrokes, open a remote channel for the attacker or download further tools.

What to look for

  • A program asks for permissions it does not need.
  • Unexpected slowness, new browser extensions or changed search settings.
  • Security tools that are switched off without your action.

What reduces the risk

  1. Install software only from the official store or the publisher's site, and verify downloads with the published hash.
  2. Keep the operating system, browser and apps updated.
  3. Use a standard account for daily work, not an administrator account.
  4. Keep an offline or versioned backup and test restoring it.
